Going along with the theme of finding something useful to build others for Christmas, I decided to build an entertainment stand for a new TV recently purchased by my brother Ryan. Unlike the porch swing, this was not going to be a surprise build because it made me very nervous to consider building something that will go inside a house without the homeowner's approval. Ryan has helped me with a few projects before and asked if he could be involved in the building process. Of course I didn't mind because it's always a little easier building with someone else, as well as being a lot quicker. So after looking at several plans, we found a console table that looked to be about the right dimensions but was lacking an additional shelf to make it a functional entertainment stand. This wouldn't be a difficult task since we just had to build an additional bottom shelf and space it accordingly.
After a trip to the store to stock up on materials, we got a late start on the build and finished up late in the evening. I must say, you make a lot more mistakes when you start building late in the afternoon. Part of this was due to the fact that we had to make a few more modifications than originally anticipated. We went back and forth with the idea of closing off the back and sides, but decided to leave it open so that it could function as a console table later if needed. We stained the entertainment stand with ebony stain to match the existing decor in the room. The finished product came out as desired and was a perfect fit for the wall space at Ryan's house. Even though we started before Christmas and finished after the New Year, it was still the perfect gift. I was also glad to finish this build because I will follow similar plans to build a new entry way table in the near future.
